1. Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you have:

2. Install Scout Post

1Find Scout Post in Google Chat

Open Google Chat, click the + button next to "Spaces" or "Direct messages", then select "Find apps". Search for "Scout Post".

2Add to a space

Click "Add to space" and choose the Google Chat space where you want Basecamp notifications to appear. You can also DM Scout Post directly.

3Authorize access

Scout Post will ask for permission to read and send messages in the space. Click "Allow" to continue.

3. Connect Your Basecamp Account

1Start the connection

Once Scout Post is added to your space, type:

/scout connect

Scout Post will respond with a link to authorize your Basecamp account.

2Authorize Basecamp

Click the authorization link. You'll be taken to Basecamp's OAuth page. Click "Yes, I'll allow access" to grant Scout Post read/write access to your Basecamp account.

3Verify the connection

After authorizing, type:

/status

You should see a confirmation with your Basecamp account name and connected projects.

You're connected! Basecamp notifications will now appear in this Google Chat space automatically.

4. Send Your First Message

Scout Post works bidirectionally. Here's how to test it:

Receive a notification

Post a message in any connected Basecamp project. Within seconds, it should appear in your Google Chat space as a card with the author, project name, and message content.

Reply from Google Chat

Click on the notification thread in Google Chat and type your reply. Scout Post will automatically post your reply back to the corresponding Basecamp thread.

Note: Replies must be in the same thread as the original notification. Starting a new thread won't link back to Basecamp.

5. Available Commands

Scout Post supports slash commands for quick actions. Type these in any space where Scout Post is added:

CommandDescription
/helpShow all available commands and usage info
/statusCheck connection status and see connected projects
/scout [message]Post a message to a Basecamp project
/find [query]Search across all your Basecamp projects for people, messages, or projects

/suggestGet an AI-suggested reply for the current thread

6. Understanding Notifications

Scout Post forwards these Basecamp events to Google Chat in real time:

Basecamp EventWhat you see in Chat
New message postedCard with author, project, and full message text
Comment addedThreaded reply card under the original notification
To-do createdCard showing the to-do title, assignee, and due date
To-do completedCard showing who completed it
Document createdCard with document title and preview
File uploadedCard with filename and download link
Question postedCard with the question and who asked it
Schedule eventCard with event details and timing

7. Tips and Best Practices

Organize by project

Create separate Google Chat spaces for different Basecamp projects. This keeps notifications organized and makes it easy to find conversations.

Use AI commands for efficiency

The /summarize command is great for catching up on long threads you missed. /suggest can draft replies for you when you're busy.

Set up webhooks for each project

Use /register to ensure each Basecamp project has an active webhook. Without webhooks, notifications won't flow into Google Chat.

Broadcast for company-wide updates

The /broadcast command posts to all connected projects at once. Use it for company announcements, status updates, or cross-project coordination.

8. Troubleshooting

Notifications aren't appearing

  1. Type /status to verify your connection is active
  2. Check that webhooks are registered: /register
  3. Verify the Basecamp project is in your connected projects list
  4. Wait a few minutes - there can be a short delay on first setup

Replies aren't posting to Basecamp

  1. Make sure you're replying in the notification thread (not a new thread)
  2. Check your connection with /status
  3. The thread mapping may have expired after 30 days of inactivity

AI commands return errors

  1. AI features require the Gemini API to be configured
  2. Try again in a few seconds - the API may be temporarily unavailable
  3. Check that your workspace has AI features enabled
